A satellite receiver designed so as to efficiently receive FTA (Free to Air) transmissions from satellites is a FTA receiver.
The MPEG-2 data compression protocol, which is generally used in maximum number of FTA satellite transmissions, can be easily decoded by the receiver.
Any DirecTV or Dish Network programming would not be un-encrypted by the FTA receiver.
Types of FTA Receiver –
Very similar to the DirecTV or Dish Network receivers, the FTA receivers are also stand-alone boxes.
There also exist a few PC based receivers. With the help of these devices the computer can be used to watch FTA satellite.
What to look for while selecting a FTA Receiver – 
It cannot be specified what exactly is needed in a FTA receiver, but a few things that should be kept in mind could be:
·Is there a PIG/PIP interface present?
·Is there an On Screen Display (OSD)?
·Is picture-in-picture supported?
·Is there an Electronic Program Guide (EPG)?
·Are you allowed to delete, rename and move channels by the OSD?
·Is Blind Search Power Scan included in the receiver?
·Can you zoom into a picture?
·Is there a personal video recorder built-in?
·Are there dual tuners present to allow recording and viewing of different channels at the same time?
·Is there an S-video output present?
·Is there a Dolby SPDIF output?

Extra equipment required for FTA Satellite –
Along with a FTA receiver, one will also require:
·An LNB
·A dish (either Ku-Band or C-Band)
·An antenna motor
