Burning a DVD

DVD stands for Digital Video Disc, DVD’s can be copied, record to or burned just like the compact discs (CD’s).

Before burning a DVD it is essential that we know what type of DVD we want to burn. The process by which we burn a DVD depends on the form of DVD we use. The three types of DVD’s we burn to a DVD are Multimedia files, Data DVD’s and making copies and burning to a commercial DVD.

BURNING DATA TO DVD

Out of the three ways of burning a DVD the easiest is burning everyday normal data. The reason is that normal data like spreadsheets, back ups, documents, database files, etc require general DVD burning software without any special type of software which is region specific. Whatever data we burn can be easily played using a DVD drive on any computer.

Most of the times we download free software for DVD burning or purchase the same but for the newly purchased computers this software already is configured and installed for the DVD burner and your machine. We just have to open the software for DVD burning, choose burning DATA DVD and follow instructions. We can burn a DVD of about 4.7 GB data in a very short time of 20 minutes or less with the high speed burners.

BURNING MULTIMEDIA FILES TO DVD

Burning of multimedia files to DVD is just the same as burning normal data with just a few added extras. These multimedia files are larger files including video recorded from our TV set or camcorder, downloaded off internet or digital camera. Most of the times people like to make copies of their marriage recording or convert old VHS tapes to user friendly form DVD.

The authoring tools of the DVD today burning multimedia files is very easy and we can give professional features like chapters so we can jump through a huge video file, add menu page or title (like wedding DVD) or we can catalogue the TV shows we saved on the hard drive of our computer. Some of the burning software even allow to add subtitles that we ourselves can create or we can add DIGITAL RIGHT MANAGEMENT (DRM) by which others cannot copy our DVD like in case of commercial videos.

TO BURN AND COPY COMMERCIAL DVD

Some people burn copies of the commercial DVD’s using their own DVD burners. It cannot be considered illegal to make copies of a copyrighted material to be used in an archive or make extra copies for using on other computer that one owns or our or car’s DVD player, however in many regions it is not legal to copy a commercial DVD and give them to others or sell them.

There are ways to copy a commercial DVD. In this case we will need a software that decodes DRM (digital rights management) along with a DVD burning software and a regular DVD burner. It is very important to keep in mind that before cracking the DRM code and copying the data of the commercial DVD which needs to be burned on to a different DVD we will first need to compress the file.

The commercial DVD’s are usually dual layered and have data of size between 7 to 8.4 GB. These files need to be first compressed so that they can fit on to a normal DVD of size 4.7 GB. But usually they should be fitted in 4.3 GB space or less. After the commercial DVD has been cracked and compressed, we can use the ordinary software for DVD burning for burning our DVD. We just need to load up our software for DVD burning and follow instructions. Most of the times the software for copying commercial DVD comes as a combination of programs where first the code is cracked or DVD is decoded, then it is shrunk to fit on to a normal DVD and then the extras are added such as chapters and subtitles and then it is burned on to a normal DVD.
