192.168.1.254 is a private IP address. It is also an IPv4 address and a default address for many routers, ADSL and cable modems. 192.168.1.254 is also a class C private IP address. This address is set by the manufacturer, but it can be changed if needed. Based on the information below, you can determine which IP address belongs to which class.

Here are the range of class networks -

Class A

This class comprises networks 1.0.0.0 to 127.0.0.0. The first octet is used to determine the Network ID allowing 126 networks approximately. It also provides for a 24-bit host part, allowing 1.6 million hosts per network. As you can see, the Class A network number values start at 1 and end with 127.

Class B

Class B contains networks from 128.0.0.0 to 191.255.0.0. The network number is in the first two octets. This class allows for 16,384 networks allowing roughly 65,000 hosts. These values start with 128 and end at 191.

Class C

Class C networks range from 192.0.0.0 to 223.255.255.0, with the network number contained in the first three octets. This class allows for almost 2 million networks and nearly 254 hosts for one network. Class C network number values begin with 192 and end with 223.

Class C network IP address range = 192.168.0.0 – 192.168.0.255
Class C network IP address range = 192.168.1.0 – 192.168.1.255

For all the Class C networks:

Subnet mask = 255.255.255.0
Network address = 24 bit
Computer address = 8 bit

Classes A, B and C are the ones assigned for normal addressing purposes on the various IP internetworks. 192.168.1.254 is a private IP address as it fits into the IP range reserved from IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) as a private range. This is done to bypass the lack of the available IP addresses. There are only a few “real” IP addresses left. They are difficult to obtain as most of them are almost used up.

The IP “192.168.1.254”, is basically reserved for private networks. You will find that although many home networks are linked to the Internet, they are not a part of it.
